"Love & War in Your Twenties" // Jordy Searcy -- hello!!
Woah... so it has definitely been awhile!! Europe and then Milwaukee... really, this summer has been too good to me. I've learned so much about myself, about my friends, about what it means to be a good friend, and just overall, that life is so crazy. The biggest thing that has changed for me is that I started to do so many things for myself and for my own happiness, despite what other people might think of me. I used to really struggle with the way that people viewed me and I was always worried that people would think I was annoying and weird. I'm not saying that I don't care about what others think; I'm saying that I really grew into myself this summer, finding things that I really loved about myself and about the woman that I want to become!
With that being said, I want to share a song with you from a time that was super crazy. I found this song recently after I came back from Europe and I was living in Milwaukee for my summer school teaching job (I would talk about that now, but I clearly cannot because that would require a whole separate blog). Everything about this song really felt like it spoke to me... from the fact that I'm turning 20 in November and most importantly, that I know I still have so much to learn. The excitement of the unknown and all the doors that could be opening in the coming years of my life seriously give me goosebumps.
This song is by Jordy Searcy and I first found it on Spotify's "Mellow Morning" playlist. Spotify is truly an incredible platform for music because of the playlists that it makes for literally any mood that you could be in! The song opens up with "Your twenties are for spending hours and hours pretending we have plans and we have places we should visit but everybody knows your twenties are for wasting time". I love these first couple of lines because I think they really emphasize the spontaneity that the twenties entails. The world is your oyster and you have all the opportunities to throw yourself into... because who really cares if the outcomes are less than ideal?? There's always tomorrow!! :)
I connected to this song mainly because of the crazy, life-changing things that happened to me this past summer. Especially in Europe, I did things that you only hear about in movies... like stripping in a nude park in Germany and sleeping in the grass with other nude German people (like not sleeping with lol... napping next to)! Drinking lager in London, going on a date with a man who lives in Rome, going clubbing in Barcelona... all of those things seriously seem surreal but I did them all! But I think that is especially what this precious time needs to be spent doing. Even five years from now, *hopefully* I'll have a job and I might even be in a relationship... either way, I'll have so many more responsibilities that won't allow me to pack a bag and decide to explore Western Europe for a month! I won't have the time to live my life freely and without thinking about tomorrow... so why not do that now??
My favorite lyric by far in this song is the following: "I don't wanna take the world for granted while I'm still trying to understand it. The more I live I am convinced everyone just wants to be in love". Honestly, this is exactly my motto for life... I really don't want to take my life (or the lives of my friends/family) for granted because really, we are only here for a short period of time. We only have like 75-80 years (depending, obviously) to live our lives to their fullest potential... so why take it for granted and waste the smaller moments in life?? Lastly, the second part of these lyrics says "The more I live I am convinced everyone just wants to be in love". I think there is a lot of truth in this statement because we are all looking to be accepted and loved in today's society. Not being a part of a group results in the awful feelings of loneliness and disconnection from society... and so of course we all just want to be in love! We want to feel like we are important and a part of something bigger than ourselves not because we are selfish (maybe you are tho - whoops!! but because, biologically speaking, the human species has always lived in groups! We thrive off of communication, socializing, and supporting each other.
I hope you enjoy this song and my thoughts/feelings that I've shared here. :) I'm sorry, again, for the long period of time that I wasn't blogging, but I'm going to really try and get on a regular schedule of maybe posting 1-2 times a week! Till then...
Sleep good and hold tight,
Sarah :) <3
