Carry You - The Sounds of a New Year
As 2018 comes to close, I'm going to be honest and tell you that these past few months have been quite difficult for me. I've struggled with figuring out who I am, where I belong, and how to open myself up to others. These battles are obviously not over. I'm fully aware that a changing year won't solve my problems... but at least a new year can be seen as a fresh start. There are so many wonderful things that I've yet to experience in this upcoming year that I don't even know about yet. There are also so many more challenges that I will be faced with that I might not be able to prepare for... they might bring tears, screams of frustration, or long nights spent wondering if there is even a purpose to it all. But... we always get through it one way or another.
For the very same reason that I've struggled to explain my deep sadness in the absence of running, I want to share the song "Carry You" by Novo Amor. This song means so much more to me than I could possibly ever describe. It was the first song that I ever heard by Novo Amor, a Welsh multi-instrumentalist who's voice soothes the soul and fills any dark room with comfort. In a time of complete devastation at the end of January last year, I remember listening to this song on repeat for hours as I curled up in my bed, sobbing over what I thought was going to be the end of my relationship (sidenote: it definitely wasn't!!). Anyways, this would mark the beginning of my journey listening to Novo Amor. Through his beautiful words and unique rhythmic designs, I've frequently found peace listening to his music.
While I could talk about all the beautifully crafted verses of "Carry You", I want to focus on the last one because it has had the greatest impact on my life:
Let it lead your love away,
I never strayed.
Let it bury you away
in all your blame, in all your pain.
I will carry you always.
Ali John Meredith-Lacey, stage name Novo Amor, spoke in an interview that this song represents all the memories of people and places that we carry with us overtime. Of course, it is impossible for us to only remember the good times because our past mistakes and tragedies will remain with us forever. However, that doesn't mean that we should live in the shadow of our own guilt. "Let it bury you away in all your blame, in all your pain" alludes to how easy it is to get lost in all of your past failures. I've frequently found myself falling into this trap, focusing on how happy I used to be, how easy life used to seem, or how better my family used to get along.
But from this song, the last repeated lines of "Fade me away, I won't ever be the same" is reassurance that it's okay for things to be different in your life.. in fact, change and learning from these differences is how we better ourselves. We will inevitably carry our past achievements and struggles with us but in doing so, we have to be aware that whatever comes our way in the future could still knock us down. To me, this song almost reminds me of a lullaby because not only is it soothing, but as crazy as it sounds, I sometimes can feel it wrap around me when I'm scared and alone.
Please please please give Novo Amor a listen! I'm beyond excited to see him live in March with a friend from school and you bet your bottom dollar I'm going to be sharing that experience here as well!
Sleep good and hold tight :)
